Graph Entropy, Network Coding and Guessing games

چکیده

We introduce the (private) entropy of a directed graph (in a new network coding sense) as well as a number of related concepts. We show that the entropy of a directed graph is identical to its guessing number and can be bounded from below with the number of vertices minus the size of the graph’s shortest index code. We show that the Network Coding solvability of each specific multiple unicast network is completely determined by the entropy (as well as by the shortest index code) of the directed graph that occur by identifying each source node with each corresponding target node. Shannon’s information inequalities can be used to calculate upper bounds on a graph’s entropy as well as calculating the size of the minimal index code. Recently, a number of new families of so-called non-shannon-type information inequalities have been discovered. It has been shown that there exist communication networks with a capacity strictly ess than required for solvability, but where this fact cannot be derived using Shannon’s classical information inequalities. Based on this result we show that there exist graphs with an entropy that cannot be calculated using only Shannon’s classical information inequalities, and show that better estimate can be obtained by use of certain non-shannon-type information inequalities. Finite dynamical systems, hat games, and coding theory

The dynamical properties of finite dynamical systems (FDSs) have been investigated in the context of coding theoretic problems, such as network coding and index coding, and in the context of hat games, such as the guessing game and Winkler’s hat game. In this paper, we relate the problems mentioned above to properties of FDSs, including the number of fixed points, their stability, and their ins...

The Guessing Number of Undirected Graphs

Riis [Electron. J. Combin., 14(1):R44, 2007] introduced a guessing game for graphs which is equivalent to finding protocols for network coding. In this paper we prove upper and lower bounds for the winning probability of the guessing game on undirected graphs. We find optimal bounds for perfect graphs and minimally imperfect graphs, and present a conjecture relating the exact value for all grap...

Problems in Network Coding and Error Correcting Codes Appended by a Draft Version of S. Riis "Utilising Public Information in Network Coding"

We show that an information network flow problem N in which n messages have to be sent to n destination nodes has a solution (that might utilize Network Coding) if and only if the directed graph GN (that appears by identifying each output node with its corresponding input node) has guessing number ≥ n. The guessing number of a (directed) graph G is a new concept defined in terms of a simple coo...

ظرفیت شبکه های حذفی تحت کدینگ فضایی شبکه

We study the capacity of point-to-point erasure networks under a restricted form of network coding to which we refer as spatial network coding. In this form of coding, the nodes can not perform coding on successive packets which are received from one incoming link. The coding at a node is restricted to the packets received at the same time slot from different incoming links...
